Continuous monitoring of the mesopelagic zone in the Cretan Sea

Field work in the context of Task 2.4 (Continuous monitoring) took place today, offshore the island of Crete. In a joint operation between projects TWINKLE and NAUTILOS (https://imbbc.hcmr.gr/project/nautilos/), a mooring line with scientific payload was successfully deployed at a bottom depth exceeding 1000 meters. For the next four to five months, the mooring will house an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), located at a depth of 450 meters and facing upwards, to monitor the diel migrating behaviour of the Mesopelagic community in the area. The collected data will hopefully offer insights regarding the main diel migration patterns, observed variations, and their possible correlation with external factors such as the moon phase and environmental variables.
